Barack Obama added to the Hall of Presidents

Disney has added the 44th president to the Hall of Presidents.   It’s amazing how realistic this audio animatronic character is.  They have also changed the show and have Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address.

Steven Spielberg continues contract

Steven Spielberg is continuing in the theme park business for another 8 years.  He has a consulting contract with Universal Studios Florida and there was an option in his contract that he could cash out in June 2010, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.  Needless to say, this would be difficult on Universal in this economy.  They aren’t going into details as to what the offer was to stay on, but he was already getting 2% of the gross from Universal Studios Florida.

Rip ride rockit app for iphone

There is a new app for the iphone that lets you look up what songs are available while you’re riding Rip Ride Rockit at Universal studios florida.  This is an interesting idea and shows the kind of novel ways that technology can make your experience at theme parks better.  Just remember not to have your phone loose on the rides or it might be the last ride it takes.

Avoid All Crowds

These are some time saving tips to remember when visiting theme parks.  Many of these are specific to Disney World since I’m compiling these for a friend; but many of them are applicable to theme parks in general.

Before you go

  • Get park maps ahead of time and pick out what you want to do.   This way you can work out a path through the park and minimize back-tracking.  It will also help to make sure you don’t miss something that you want to see.
  • Look at the park hours and try to pick where you will be on each day of your trip.  Knowing where you will be ahead of time lets you make reservations for restaurants.
  • If you plan on doing any character restaurants, make reservations early.  They take them 90 days ahead  of time and the popular ones easily fill up months ahead of time.
  • Don’t forget the sun tan lotion and camera batteries and stuff like that.  You can buy them on site, but it’s a lot cheaper to have it ahead of time.
  • Extra memory card for the camera.  You can never have too many photos.

Getting into the parks

  • Show up at least a half hour before the park opens.  Lots of people don’t and it will give you time to get in a ride or two before the lines pick up.
  • Have your tickets ahead of time.  Why spend part of your day in line to get tickets while others are walking through the gate and getting in lines in front of you.
  • The slowest lines are the ones with either kids or old people in them.  They don’t grasp the whole ‘put your finger on the reader’ system of capturing your finger print and it slows things down.
  • Don’t bring a bag with a ton of pockets and pouches on it.  Because they look in your bag when you go in, the more pockets = longer delay.

Once you’re in the park

  • Use the fastpass system.  It can save you time when done right.  For instance, at Disney Hollywood Studios you want to get a fastpass for the Rockin’ Roller Coaster, then go stand in line for the tower of terror.  About the time you get off the tower, you can go straight on the other one.
  • Eat at off times.  Restaurants get crowded quick, so eating at noon will easily take twice as long as eating at 11:30.  I usually bring pop tarts or something like that for breakfast at the hotel.
  • If you’re staying at a disney resort, check the park schedule for Extra Magic Hours.  These are times when the park either opens early or stays open late for guests who are staying at a disney resort.  Usually these can be a nice little bit of extra time in the park.  On holidays, however, you have to remember that Disney has 27 different resorts that have access to this perk, so for some parks I think it’s better to do the opposite.  (For instance, if the Magic Kingdom has extra hours at night, I’ll go there in the morning because most other guests are going to be there at night.)  Also remember that not all the attractions will be open for the extra magic hours.
  • Think ahead before Park Hopping.  Disney makes a big deal out of the convenience of paying extra to jump from park to park.  In a way, they are right. It’s very convenient to spend part of the day one place and then go to another.  Just remember that it will take you almost an hour and a half to get from one park to the next.  It’s not that the bus/boat/monorail system is slow, it’s just that it takes a half hour to get back to the front of the park, then 20 minutes or so of waiting on the bus/boat/monorail, and then another half hour to get to the next park, back through the turnstiles and into the park where you can do stuff.  If you are going to a hotel for one of the restaurants, try to make that your last stop of the night.  (and on the subject of hotel restaurants, Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge kicks ass and so does the California Grill in the contemporary resort.  If you time it right, you can go out on the observation deck there and watch the fireworks over the Magic Kingdom at night.)
  • If it’s a holiday, be mindful that they sometimes have special events at night that cost extra for admission.  (The not so scary Halloween Party, and that kind of thing.)
  • This one is not so much a time saver as an effort saver.  If you are staying at a Disney hotel the following day, have your packages delivered to your room.  this way you don’t have to lug them around the park.

The final thing to remember is that you are here on vacation.  don’t get so caught up in doing all the things you have to do to forget having fun.  That extra pause to have someone take your photo and make you 30 seconds late to get to your lunch reservation isn’t going to kill you.

Demon Drop on the move

This is one of the stranger stories of the year.  Cedar Fair is taking a drop ride that opened in 1983 at Cedar Point and moving it to Knott’s Berry Farm.  Cedar Point has been trying to sell the ride, but couldn’t find a buyer.  What’s odd is that they are moving it to a park that really just doesn’t need it.  All I can figure is that since this park’s competition is putting in new rides, they want to have something to say is ‘new’ even though they know it doesn’t measure up to the competition.  The other factor that may be influencing this decision is that Cedar Point is putting in two large coasters at Carowinds and Kings Dominion for next year, so they might not have the resources to do anything bigger/better at Knott’s Berry Farm until the following year.

Tomorrowland Transit Authority update

Attractions magazine has posted pictures and video of the revamped Tomorrowland Transit Authority at the Magic Kingdom.

I’m looking forward to riding that again myself because it’s a nice relaxed break from the crowds of the Magic Kingdom.

Video of Sum of all Thrills

Lifthill.com has compiled a collection of videos of the sum of all thrills and I just wanted to pass them along for anyone who is interested.

Costumed family asked to leave Busch Gardens

A costumed family was asked to leave Busch Gardens Tampa because costumes are not allowed in the park.  They say it can confuse people into thinking the patrons were park employees.  I know costumes with masks have not been allowed for some time, but I don’t see why these costumes wouldn’t be allowed.  I’m pretty sure that no one would mistake the young children for employees.

Animal Kingdom gets new giraffes

Disney’s Animal Kingdom received an early christmas present in the way of two baby giraffes.  Bolo, the second giraffe born there in a week was born Oct 12th.

Monorail rises from the ashes

Disney is taking the two damaged monorails from the accident that killed a Disney staff member in July and combining them into a new train.  They are also retiring the colors of the two trains out of respect for Austin Wuennenberg, who was killed in that accident.

Sum of all thrills

Epcot has unveiled it’s latest ride named the ‘Sum of all thrills.’  It’s similar to the roller coaster simulator at disney quest in that you design your own ride and then get strapped in to ride what you created.  As such, it can be a very gentle ride or a very crazy ride.

Intimidator Carowinds capped

Intimidator at Carowinds has had it’s life hill capped off and onlookers can easily see the hill form I-77.  You can also check out their facebook page for the latest updates on the construction of this coaster and other park news.

Anheuser Busch theme parks sold

InBev sold the Anheuser Busch parks to the Blackstone group for up to 2.7 billion dollars.

This price is an absolute steal considering how much cedar fair paid for the Paramount parks a few short years ago.  Granted, the economy hadn’t totally tanked back then, but the Former Anheuser Busch parks bring considerably more traffic than the paramount parks did.  This does present an interesting opportunity for the A-B parks since Blackstone also owns  half of Universal studios in Orlando.

My only hope is that they don’t let the parks get run down since Busch Gardens Tampa is probably my overall favorite theme park that I have visited.

Time lapse film of Magic Kingdom

Disney has released a time lapse tilt-shift video of a day at the Magic Kingdom.  It starts off with everyone arriving and the park filling up and ends with the parade at night.  It’s a really cool way to spend 3 minutes of your life.
